The Atlantic is adding a big name for a new beat: Jemele Hill. After reporting for over a decade at ESPN, Hill will be a staff writer covering issues related to sports, race, politics and culture. She will also have a podcast.

Hill said in a statement that joining The Atlantic “made perfect sense” because “it’s critical to be aligned with people who understand this mission.” She noted, “Sports is a great entry point for exploring what’s happening in the wider society.”

During her tenure at ESPN, Hill served as a host of “SportsCenter” and columnist for ESPN.com. She most recently covered the intersection of sports, culture and race for ESPN’s The Undefeated.

In May, Hill was selected as the 2018 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.
