With Foer, Gray & Other Hires, The Atlantic Expands at Historic Moment

The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeff Goldberg wants to strengthen the magazine’s politics and policy team in preparation for the incoming presidential administration. “The world’s biggest story just dropped in our lap,” Goldberg said to magazine owner David Bradley after election night. “We have to be all over this.”

In response, the Atlantic is adding more veteran talent. Franklin Foer, author and former editor of The New Republic, will write “big heave magazine” pieces and help generate new story ideas, according to the Huffington Post. Rosie Gray, formerly of BuzzFeed News will also join the Atlantic to cover global affairs and U.S. politics. Known as one of BuzzFeed’s most prominent political reporters, she covered Republican politics in the 2012 and 2016 elections. These hires follow additions of McKay Coppins (also of BuzzFeed) and Julia Ioffe (from POLITICO) in recent weeks.

The Huffington Post further quotes Goldberg describing his view on the importance of these hires saying, “The Atlantic was created for moments for like this ― quite literally. The Atlantic was created at a moment of intense fracturing.”
