Michael Scherer, author of more than 20 TIME cover stories, is heading to the Washington Post on September 5 to cover politics and serve as a national political reporter.

The Post’s national editor Scott Wilson and senior politics editor Steven Ginsberg announced Scherer’s new role saying, “Michael is an extremely accomplished political reporter and writer who has mastered every story form, from quick digital analyses to memorable cover-story features. His mission will be as broad as his considerable talents.” Scherer will continue to cover the Trump administration and lead the Post’s coverage of the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election.

Scherer joins the Post after a decade of covering presidential elections and the White House for TIME. He served as TIME’s Washington Bureau Chief since 2013 after joining TIME’s White House team as a correspondent in 2009. He’s been awarded the National Press Club’s Lee Walczak Award for Political Excellence for his writing on the 2012 Obama reelection and the 2014 New York Press Club Award for Political Coverage for a cover story on the 2013 government shutdown.
